The sporadic simple groups are among the most mysterious objects in Mathematics.

We will discuss, by means of an example, links between them and the very practical field of Coding Theory.  The latter subject is concerned with security of communication and transmission of (especially) digital data, and soon leads to subtle algebraic and combinatorial questions.  The smallest sporadic simple group is in essence the automorphism group of the Ternary Golay Code, a particularly interesting code with remarkable properties.  We will show links between these two fascinating objects by using representation theory and fusion theory, strong research themes in the Aberdeen Institute of Mathematics.
