Professor Graham Watt was the Norie Miller Professor of General Practice at the University of Glasgow from 1994 - 2016. He retired in December 2016, but remains active as Emeritus Professor.
After graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 1976, followed by hospital posts in Shetland, Leicester, Aberdeen and Nottingham, he sought to combine training in epidemiology and general practice, moving to work with Dr Julian Tudor Hart at Glyncorrwg in South Wales, where they carried out a challenging series of community studies on the effect of dietary salt intake on blood pressure.
He coordinated and led the Deep End Project from 2009 - 2016, based on the 100 most deprived general practice populations in Scotland, has edited 13 Deep End International Bulletins and remains an advocate for the exceptional potential of general practice, especially in deprived areas. He has longstanding academic links with the Institute of Community and Public Health at Birzeit University in the West Bank, chairs the Palestinian Health Alliance (PHA) Steering Group, and has been a trustee of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) from 2006 - 15 and from 2017 to the present. He is also Vice Chair of the Scottish Professional Football League Trust.
