In the last two decades, research into the history of intellectual property law has been on the rise. Flagship projects, such as the AHRC-funded Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900) have revealed the scope and range of relevant materials, and made them accessible to those without physical access to the archives, or confidence in how to use them. But why do this kind of research? What can the study of IP’s history tell us in an age where technological advances seem to occur every week, or even within days? What are the advantages, as well as the pitfalls, or historical research? This seminar will examine (and try to answer!) these questions drawing on research from my recent book, Copyright and Cartography, as well as my new project on the history of copyright in engravings.
Professor Isabella Alexander
Isabella Alexander BA (Hons) LLB (Hons) (ANU) PhD (Cantab) is a professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology Sydney. She researches and teaches in Intellectual Property Law and legal history. Her most recent monograph, Copyright and Cartography: History, Law, and the Circulation of Geographical Knowledge, was published by Bloomsbury/Hart in July 2023.
