Talk by PhD researcher David Lorimer from the Centre of Scots Law

David is currently undertaking PhD research into ways to protect complainers in sexual offences.  In light of several recent publications, David will discuss these works in relation to his own findings.  These include the review of the law on sexual offences in Northern Ireland (Gillen), the Scottish study of mock jury decision making (Ipsos MORI) and an article about the creation of a Sexual Offences Court in Scotland (Scottish Legal News).

David has written a number of articles which collectively flag concerns about radically reforming and thereby disrupting 'the balance of uncertainty' in relation to tried and tested Scots laws of evidence and procedure in order to improve justice in rape trials. He advocates another, more incremental and arguably more efficient, route to reform.
