Centre for Applied Dynamic Research
Summer School
10th June - 10th September 2025

- Aim
-
The programme aims to equip postgraduate students and early-career academic staff with essential skills for conducting high-quality research and effectively disseminating their findings through high-calibre academic outputs. Under the leadership of Professor Marian Wiercigroch, this programme provides an integrated learning experience in both fundamental research principles and applied engineering methods.
- Structure
-
Under Professor Marian Wiercigroch’s leadership, delivered by CADR members, the course is organised as follows:
Conducting Research and Academic Writing
Focused sessions on research design, methodology, academic writing, and publication strategies. These sessions will also highlight best practices for identifying high-impact journals and aligning research with publishing goals.
Research Laboratory Introduction
A guided tour and overview of experimental facilities, instruments, and research workflows within the lab environment. Participants will gain exposure to live demonstrations and safety procedures related to mechanical and structural testing systems.
Instrumentation and DAQ System Overview and Demonstration
Hands-on session introducing instrumentation and Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems, including system setup, real-time data capture, and analysis tools. Emphasis will be placed on sensor integration, signal processing, and using DAQ systems in experimental mechanics.
Group Research Projects
Participants will collaborate in small teams to tackle a real-world research challenge. Each group will:
- Define their research problem.
• Plan and execute a research approach (theoretical or experimental).
• Analyse and interpret results.
• Prepare a summary report and presentation.
Projects may involve numerical simulation, experimental analysis, or hybrid approaches, depending on available resources and group interests.
Biweekly Group Progress Meetings – 30 minutes per group
Scheduled check-ins with each research team to:
• Review progress and direction.
• Identify technical or conceptual issues.
• Receive detailed feedback from faculty or mentors.
• Ensure milestones are met leading up to the final presentation.
These mentoring sessions are designed to simulate academic supervision and foster collaborative problem-solving.Final Presentations by Participants – 10–15 minutes per group
Each group will present their research outcomes to peers and instructors. Presentations should include:
• Research objective and methodology
• Use of lab resources or numerical simulations
• Results and interpretation
• Challenges, lessons learned, and future plans
A short Q&A and feedback session will follow the presentations. Presentations will be assessed based on clarity, technical depth, teamwork, and potential for future development. - Define their research problem.
