Post-Hazard Learning and Decision-Making for Infrastructure Systems

Professor Armen Der Kiureghian discusses the recovery of infrastructure systems in the aftermath of major hazards.

Robust performance and rapid recovery of infrastructure systems in the immediate aftermath of a major hazard are crucial for mitigating losses and assuring the well-being of communities. Infrastructures, such as transportation and communication networks, and power, water and gas distribution systems, are especially vulnerable to natural and man-made hazards due to their spatially-distributed exposure, dependence between component states, and multiplicity of failure modes. In this lecture, Professor Der Kiureghian will discuss the use of the Bayesian network methodology to model the hazard and infrastructure system and to process information gained from observations. He will also use influence diagrams to make decisions on operational levels of system components and to prioritise component inspections. An application to a hypothetical model of the California high-speed rail system in the aftermath of an earthquake in the Bay Area will demonstrate the approach.

Professor Armen Der Kiureghian is a renowned expert in probabilistic methods, risk analysis and decision-making in engineering. He is the Interim President of the American University of Armenia, which is an affiliate of the University of California located in Yerevan, Armenia. He is on leave from the University of California, Berkeley, where he is Professor and holder of the Taisei Chair in Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Professor Der Kiureghian’s topics of teaching and research include risk and reliability analysis of engineering systems, stochastic structural dynamics, and earthquake engineering. He is recipient of numerous awards, including the Alfred M. Freudenthal and the George Winter Medals of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and an elected foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
