While China is hit on average by several typhoons per year, there is nevertheless no quantitative estimate of the actual economic impact of these potentially disastrous storms. In this paper we combine satellite derived proxies of local economic activity and typhoon storm tracks to quantify the effect localy . Our results suggest that losses have been considerable in net terms, particularly in those areas prone to storm surge, but that a large part of this due to the rising agglomeration of economic activity on the coast. Synthetically generated storms suggest that losses in the near future will also be considerable.
