The Dragon in China: Myth, Power, and Identity
-

Join us for this fascinating lecture about the iconic Chinese dragon.

From ancient ritual object to imperial symbol and modern cultural icon, the Chinese dragon has embodied power, transformation, and identity for over three thousand years. This lecture traces its evolution across mythology, art, and politics, revealing how the dragon became not only the emblem of the emperor, but also a symbol of cultural continuity and national imagination.

Join us in person for this free lecture by Daniela C. Zhang, PhD, researcher of Chinese art and literature at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Comenius University in Bratislava. Her work explores modern ink art, cultural identity, and Chinese artistic traditions. She is the author of Breaking the Ink – Abstract Ink Art in Mainland China (2020) and co-author of several books, including Dragons and Dragon Beings (2022). She has published widely, held research fellowships in Taiwan and China, and is also a literary translator.
