Professor Bill Naphy is back with this fascinating talk on the women's movement in America from the the early to mid 1900s.
This session will look at the momentous changes, and tenacious conservatism, which swirled around reality of life for women from the turn of the 20th century to the Second World War in the US. We will consider calls for change as well as forces, often led by women, fighting against change. The talk will also consider the actual ‘place’ of women during the first half of the century. The middle of the period saw the great advance of the vote for women and there were also discussions about birth control (and eugenics). Urban women who poured out of the home and into work during the First World War were loathe to return but this often contrasted with conservative, largely rural women’s voices which called for ‘traditional values’. Professor Naphy will examine how these interacted as the decades passed.
