Join us for this frightening and festive Christmas ghost stories talk!
The comfort of huddling around a fire with family and friends on a cold winter’s night was something that the Victorians truly valued, especially if it was coupled with a scary story of ghosts and strange occurrences. In this talk, Dr Helena Ifill looks at how the ghost story became so closely associated with the Christmas period during the Victorian era. She discusses some of the different types of ghost story that were popular with Victorian readers – from the suspenseful to the gruesome – and the way in which oral storytelling traditions paired with increased literacy and the growth of popular magazines to influence how these ghost stories were shared between people. And of course, she will recommend some of her favourite spooky stories.
Joining instructions will be issued a couple of days before the event.
