This is a past event
This paper looks back at key moments in the development and completion of this multi-connected project, how and why it ‘growed’, and how it was grown. I first present some of the highs and lows of work that has taken me nearly 20 years to complete. It needed that time! The main reason was the project’s ‘interdisciplinarity’. As a keyword in (REF) research and UK HEI ‘Strategy’ documents, the project (and similar research) then raises three important questions:
1. What is ‘interdisciplinary’ about research in nineteenth-century (women in) history of science? Would other optics and approaches be more useful?
2. How does disciplinarity make a difference in big project design, and execution?
This part of the paper unpacks some lessons from my project concerning research practice and packaging.
3. Why does ‘Topsy’ research matter? (How) can it make a difference?
In the final part of the paper I return to some of the conclusions of my project, to spearhead discussion about paths that should (not) be trodden when we step into the ‘beyonds’ of our ‘PhD’ discipline.
