A Scandinavian Pilgrim in the Mediterranean World in 1153
-

This is a past event

In 1152/53 the Icelander Nikolas Bergsson travelled from Iceland to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage, and had a short itinerary written about his journey.

Together with numismatist Svein Gullbekk, Prof. Orning has followed in his footsteps with bicycle to Rome, resulting in the book En reise til Roma (A journey to Rome, translation to English forthcoming)

From Rome they travelled by bicycle, ship, plane or car through the Mediterranean to write the sequel from Rome to Jerusalem.

Prof. Orning will join the Scandinavian Studies seminar series to discuss his book and the following questions: What would Nikolas encounter in the eastern Mediterranean, how would he as an Icelander experience the region, and in what ways does the Mediterranean in 2025 depart from the Mediterranean anno 1153?
