"Ukraine's Heritage in Times of War"
Research Seminar and Screening titled "Ukraine’s Heritage in Times of War," presented by visiting researcher Dr. Noelia Fernandez Garcia (University of Leon) and Lecturer Dr. Barbara Barreiro Leon (University of Aberdeen). This event is organized by the George Washington Wilson Centre and will be held on Thursday, 14th November at 5pm in the Macrobert Lecture Theatre.
The seminar will include a screening of the powerful documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, which offers an intimate and intense portrayal of life under siege in Ukraine. This film provides crucial context for the conversation, as it illustrates the profound impact of conflict on cultural heritage and everyday life. Following the screening, Dr. Fernandez Garcia and Dr. Barreiro Leon will lead a discussion on the preservation of Ukrainian heritage during wartime.
This is a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the role of memory, resilience, and heritage amidst the trials of conflict. Whether your interests lie in heritage studies, conflict research, or cultural identities, this seminar will offer meaningful insights and stimulate further academic exploration.
Dr. Noelia Fernández García, a Lecturer in Art History at the University of León, Spain, specializes in the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage and its link to cultural identities. Her research explores community responses to the destruction of cultural heritage, both from armed conflicts—such as the Spanish Civil War and the Russian invasion of Ukraine—and from transformative infrastructure projects like dam construction in Europe. She has contributed to numerous academic journals and conferences, sharing insights on the impact of traumatic heritage loss and its influence on collective memory and identity.
