College of Fort William (Calcutta, India)
Biography
The College of Fort William, Kolkata was an academy and learning centre of Oriental studies established by Lord Wellesley, then Governor-General of British India. Its original purpose was to train British officials in numerous oriental languages but became a centre of learning and promotion of Indian literature. Thousands of books were translated from Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu in English at this institution which employed scholars from all over the Indian Sub-Continent. Books were transcribed, translated, written and published here.
In 1805, a consigment of books was sent by the Vice-Provost of Fort William College, Claudius Buchanan to the "University of Aberdeen" and were taken into the library at Marischal College. King's College disputed the ownership of the books.
