Widening participation in medicine across Scotland

Scottish Widening Access to Medicine Research Network

The Scottish Widening Access to Medicine Research Network (SWAM-RN) was established at the University of Aberdeen in 2021 with the aim of creating a collaborative community supporting research and evaluation in relation to widening participation to medicine across Scotland.

SWAM-RN brings together representatives from all five Scottish medical schools, alongside partners including You Can Be A Doctor and Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland.  The network is currently led by Professor Colin Lumsden and Dr Katie Gibson Smith.

In recognition of the importance of widening participation to medicine in Scotland, SWAM-RN has received funding from PSD Scotland to support network activity over a one-year period until April 2027.  This funding supports a range of activities across the network and included the appointment of a Research Fellow.

Who we are

SWAM-RN is a growing network of stakeholders involved in widening participation to medicine research across Scotland. This includes representatives from all five Scottish medical schools - University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, and University of St Andrews - as well as YouCanBeADoctor, Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland, the Medical Schools Council, and NHS Boards across Scotland.

The Scottish Widening Access to Medicine Research Network is currently led by Professor Colin Lumsden and Dr Katie Gibson Smith.
