What is it?

The University of Aberdeen has created a Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills, accredited by the ILM. This course is a professional development opportunity designed for registered undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Aberdeen and AFG College with the University of Aberdeen.  The Award’s content has been created to align with our students’ experiences and supports their motivation in having a range of evidence beyond their University degree programme to affirm their experiences to future employers. There are two units in the award, each takes around 10 hours to complete of self study on MyAberdeen.

Programme objectives

Students study two units, the content of which is created specifically for UoA students.

  • Unit 1: Leading your work team considers how you can use accepted management theories and models to inspire good performance within a team in a workplace environment. 
    Learning outcomes:
    • Understand the difference between leadership and management.
    • Understand a range of leadership styles, their benefits, and potential impact on individuals and performance.
       
  • Unit 2: Managing yourself will focus on time management, how to manage the causes and symptoms of stress and strategies to improve your skills as a team leader. 
    Learning outcomes:
    • How to use effective personal time management to achieve team goals.
    • Know how to manage own stress.

Who can take part?

This online ILM 2 Award is only available to current students registered at the University of Aberdeen. All current students, regardless of year of study or subject are elgibile.

What are the benefits of completing this award?

  • The ILM is the UK’s largest awarding body for Management, Leadership and Coaching qualification.
  • The University of Aberdeen has been approved by the Institute of Leadership & Management (now ILM) since 2011. This partnership means our programmes in Leadership and Management Development are coupled with a formal ILM qualification.
  • While studying for an ILM Award, you can receive 12 months complimentary studying membership of The Institute of Leadership and Management.

How much does it cost?

The ILM 2 Award costs £175. However, we currently have 20 bursaries available which will reduce the student contribution to £25. These are available on a first come, first served basis. The bursary funding is generously provided by the University of Aberdeen Development Trust SCIO from the Student Experience Fund.

How do I apply for a bursary?

How much does it cost?

The ILM 2 Award costs £175. However, thanks to funding generously provided by the University of Aberdeen Development Trust SCIO from the Student Experience Fund, we currently have 20 bursaries available which will reduce the student contribution to £25. These are available on a first come, first served basis. Please complete the online form, after which you will be invited to a short meeting to discuss your application. Students who will be graduating in Summer 2024 must apply for the bursary by 15th April and complete the ILM by 17th May. 

How do I participate?

Once you have purchased the course you will be given access to the course on MyAberdeen. The two modules are completed completely online through self study. Learning consists of information slides and exercises to be completed in an accompanying workbook. We anticipate the course will take 20 hours to complete.

How is the ILM 2 Award assessed?

You are asked to complete two workbooks whilst undertaking the course (one per unit). You will be asked to reflect on your own experience and contribute to discussion boards on MyAberdeen. At the end of the course you will submit your workbook to be marked in accordance with ILM criteria.

What is the timescale for completing the ILM 2 Award?

Once you start your ILM2 Award, you will be given a choice of 4 exit points (below) by which to complete the course. Details of final assessment date will be available upon purchase.

  3. 17 May 2024 (last date for summer 2024 graduates)
