How to prepare

Top tips

Attending a careers fair can be a daunting prospect, particularly if this is your first event of this type and you have not spoken to many employers in the past. However, there are some simple things you can do to make the most of the event:

  • Make a plan. Review the list of exhibitors, visit their websites and make a note of those who most interest you and any specific questions you have for them. A good tip is to walk around the fair once to get a feel for the event and where your target organisations are. Then go round a second time ready to ask your questions.
  • Question, questions, questions… Also consider some more general questions that you could ask at the fair. You will usually be speaking either to recruiters or recent graduate recruits. Your questions should help you to gather insights into the recruitment process, what it is like to work at the organisation, opportunities, benefits, skills needed etc. – and anything else you need to know to work out if an employer is right for you.
  • Travel alone! If you are attending the fair with friends, make sure you still get to speak to the organisations which interest YOU. You won’t leave a lasting impression by listening to other people asking questions. You can always check in with your friends after you have spoken to your top targets – before diving back in.
  • Use your time wisely. Ideally, don’t queue to speak to employers. Instead, move on to the next employer and come back. Some employers may be very busy, however, so give yourself plenty of time.

We’re here to help. Come and find us at the Careers and Employability Service stand and, hopefully, we can point you in the right direction.
