Summer herbaceous colourMiss Cruickshank' original bequest was established as a Charitable Trust that still owns about half of the land incorporated in the Garden, including the original Cruickshank Building, which now forms part of the School of Biological Sciences.

The Trustees are The Principal of the University, the Professor of Mathematics, the Professor of Botany and three lay Trustees. The Trustees appoint the Keeper of the Garden, normally the Regius Professor of Botany, who oversees the maintenance, development and finances of the Garden.

The Trustees contribute financially to the upkeep of the Garden as circumstances permit, but in practice the main burden of the upkeep of the Garden has always been assumed by the University, who maintain the fabric and pay the staff.
