Anthropology and Theology graduate Morgane Taillefesse has been named winner of the 2023 UK Student Essay Prize by the Royal Anthropological Institute.
Morgane, who graduated in the summer, received glowing praise from the judges for her final year undergraduate dissertation in anthropology, entitled ‘Dismantling and Rebuilding Ise-JingÅ«: A Material Study for Rethinking the Religious and the Secular in Japan’.
The piece investigates the relationship between religious shrines in Japan, natural environment and cultural landscapes.
Morgane, who was also selected as one of four recipients of the John Reid Postgraduate Scholarship for 2023-2024, is now enrolled in Curating Cultures Master’s programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
“This is second time a student from the Anthropology department has received this prestigious award from the Royal Anthropological Institute, something we are incredibly proud to note,” said Dr Tatiana Argounova-Iow, Head of Anthropology.
“Congratulations to Morgane and to the staff who supported her during her studies. We look forward to continuing success in the future.”
