Getting Started

You may encounter project management for the first time at university, and wonder how to get started. The 'Fundamentals' video provides a good introduction and we also feature a free project management course in the Links section, and downloadable guide in the Guides section.

Project Management Tools

Choosing the best project management tool will depend on the size and complexity of your project. Here are some of the best free programs you have access to:

• MS Planner is a task/Kanban tool so it's at the lighter end of the scale and best suited for lightweight projects, essays etc. It's like a digital to-do board with task tracking. Free for staff and students through MS365.
• MindGenius is more robust, featuring numerous project management options including WBS-via-mind-map, Gantt and critical path. Free for staff and students through Software Center and Software Download Service.
• ProjectLibre is free, open source, and has full project management workflow built in, including native earned value calculations (PV, EV, AC, CPI, SPI). ProjectLibre is not compatible with Mac devices. This is a third-party application - please see the Information section for further details
• ClickUp has a free forever option and is similar to ProjectLibre but works on Mac devices. It's a project management platform featuring numerous options for robust project management. This is a third-party application - please see the Information section for further details.
