Carnegie Masters Grants

Summary

The Carnegie Education Fund is launching a new grant scheme to help more people in Scotland access postgraduate study. Carnegie Masters Grants will support students living in low income households in Scotland to undertake a taught or research master's degree at a Scottish university.

Description

A Carnegie Masters Grant will provide a contribution towards the cost of Home-rate tuition fees, over and above the SAAS loan amount.

In some cases, a Carnegie Masters Grant can also help with the additional costs of study, such as travel, childcare, or equipment costs. The information you submit in your application will be used to determine eligibility.

Eligibility

Applicants may hold an offer to study on a full-time, part-time (minimum of 0.5 FTE) or distance learning basis.

  • be ordinarily resident in Scotland
  • have a meaningful connection to Scotland
  • live in a lower-income household
  • hold an offer for an eligible taught or research Masters programme
  • do not already hold a Masters qualification.

Full eligibility criteria can be found at https://carnegie-trust.org/new-carnegie-masters-grants-to-support-fair-access-to-postgraduate-study-in-scotland/.

Criteria

The following courses are not eligible for support:

  • Postgraduate courses leading solely to a Certificate or Diploma qualification (e.g. PGDip, PGCert, PGCE, PGDE)
  • Masters of Business Administration (MBA) courses
  • MPhil or PhD programmes.

Application Procedure

To apply for a Carnegie Masters Grant, you will first need to apply for a postgraduate tuition fee loan, worth up to £7,000, through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). You can then apply to Carnegie Education Fund for the remaining costs of your tuition fee.

Applications for the 2026/27 academic year will open on 1 May 2026, with the applicant guide now available for prospective students.

Applications are made directly to the Carnegie Education Fund. For further details and information, please explore https://carnegie-trust.org/new-carnegie-masters-grants-to-support-fair-access-to-postgraduate-study-in-scotland/.
