Professor Debra Gimlin Prize 2025/26

Summary

This £1,000 prize was established in memory of Professor Debra Gimlin, former Head of the School of Social Science at the University of Aberdeen. Professor Gimlin was an internationally renowned sociologist, a highly valued member of staff, and a truly beloved colleague.

Description

This prize will inspire and support students within the University of Aberdeen whose research interests lie in qualitative social science, in particular within the discipline of sociology, the area for which Professor Gimlin was most renowned and respected.

Eligibility

The Professor Debra Gimlin Prize is open to all current registered students at the University of Aberdeen, with preference given to students within the School of Social Science. The prize will be awarded to support students whose research interests lie in qualitative social science, preferably within the discipline of sociology. The prize is available for this 2025/26 academic year.

Criteria

Appropriate applications may include field trip or conference costs, travel costs, the purchase or utilisation of technology including new equipment, programmes and online projects and other research costs. The prize may also be awarded to support financial hardship at the discretion of the academic selection panel.

Unsuccessful applicants may apply again in following years - however an award will only be made once to an individual student during their cycle of study.

Application Procedure

Student applicants should submit a summary of their project proposal and reason for application, including a full financial breakdown, along with a letter of support from a supervisor and/or personal tutor. Students should include their CV, including their University ID number. These documents should be no more than 2 pages of A4 each.

An academic selection panel consisting of representatives from each of the departments within the School of Social Science (Anthropology, Politics & International Relations, and Sociology) will meet to review the applications and make the award. You will find out the outcome of your application by the end of May 2026.
