Sustained Studies

Sustained Studies

During your first two years of undergraduate studies, you will normally select a number of optional courses. This allows you to broaden your skillset by studying different courses of your choice alongside your primary degree subject. At the School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture we offer "Sustained Study" in all of our primary language options as well as three additional languages. These are:

  • French
  • German
  • Gaelic
  • Spanish
  • Arabic
  • Swedish
  • Mandarin

The courses are open to students from all schools across the university, which means that you will get the opportunity to network with students from completely different degree programmes. Studying a language alongside almost any other degree gives you the opportunity to interact with others, obtain new perspectives, improve your critical thinking, enhance your communication skills, try different learning strategies and increase your employability. All language options are available for complete beginners. You do not need to have studied a language before. However, French, Gaelic, German and Spanish also offer courses for students with previous qualifications.
