Next Thursday, 5th February at 15:00 in the Zoology Lecture Theatre and on Teams, the first SBS seminar of 2026 will be presented by Professor Kenny Kortland, Environment Policy Advisor, Scottish Forestry. 

Scottish Forestry is the Scottish Government agency responsible for forestry policy, support and regulations. Professor Kortland's role includes advising on woodland creation and management to maximise biodiversity, farm woodlands as well as many other strategic issues

Kenny has recently been made an Honorary Professor of the University and continues to co-supervise multiple research students. Kenny was previously Wildlife Ecologist at Forestry and Land Scotland, and long ago Aberdeen Zoology BSc and MSc graduate.

The title of his seminar is “ Are conifer plantations really devoid of life?” with capsule “Conifer plantations are widely condemned for their lack of biodiversity - particularly by rewilding advocates. This talk will consider that claim and discuss management of plantations for priority species.”
