Speaker - Dr Ophélie Ronce
I am interested in the role that evolution plays in the response of biodiversity to global changes. The distribution and persistence of species in a changing environment depend on both (i) their life-history traits (their dispersal abilities, fecundity and lifespan) and (ii) their ecological niche (i.e. the range of environmental conditions allowing the growth and maintenance of populations). My research is aimed at furthering our understanding of (i) how disturbance regimes and spatial structure shape the evolution of life histories and ecological niches in the long term, (ii) short-term feedbacks between ecological and evolutionary dynamics following environmental changes, (ii) consequences of these long-term and short-term processes in the context of contemporary global changes. To answer these questions, I use mainly a theoretical approach, combining the development of mathematical models and simulations, and I collaborate with empiricists studying adaptation to environmental change in various species of plants, animals and micro-organisms.
