Job Description

This multidisciplinary project is using rodent-borne pathogens in Madagascar to improve our understanding of zoonotic disease transmission. It focuses on four diseases: plague, leptospirosis, rickettsioses and hantavirus and is investigating the factors influencing disease dynamics within reservoir hosts and exposure rates in human communities.

This post will focus on synthesising and analysing the results on human-animal contact patterns across urban and rural communities, and the potential and realised implications for zoonotic risk. The successful applicant will use advanced statistical analyses to explore variation in human-animal contact and exposure status, and how these relate to factors such as gender, age, socio-economic status and environment (e.g. proximity to forest, levels of urbanisation and rates of deforestation, climate).

The project is led by Dr Sandra Telfer and is conducted in close collaboration with the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

As this appointment is externally funded by Wellcome Trust it is available for 12 months.
