Compulsory course for all students in the BEd (Hons) Primary programme in Year 1. PVG Scheme check completed prior to start of course.

Overview

Number of BEd students to be permitted to register is to be restricted due to the targets set by government and the management of placements and prior requirement for Disclosure (Scotland) check

Opportunities for student involvement in the content and structure of the course include:
* Community placement project
* Course delivery through student-led seminars
* Student-selected multi-media presentation

Throughout the course both on and off campus, students are encouraged through engagement with others to value diversity.

Structure

13 one-hour lectures, 2 two-hour forum, 14 1.5 hour tutorials, will follow a varied pattern. 7 days or equivalent (45 hours) in community placement.

Assessment

1st Attempt: 3,000 word essay
Multi-media presentation based on experiences within the community placement; format to be agreed by tutor

Resit: Resubmission of failed criteria within 3,000 word essay Oral presentation (viva) based on community placement

Formative Assessment

Peer assessment of reflective writing in Week 16
Peer assessment of contribution to group tutorials in Week 22
On-going formative feedback on contributions and engagement with reading during tutorials

Feedback

* In sufficient time to be able to be used by students to improve their work (typically within four weeks of hand-in, in line with the School of Education's policy on Assessment
* Appropriate and relevant feedback to help students understand where they have both gained and lost marks, and how to improve their mark
* face to face meetings between tutors and students who have failed
