Overview

Developing a critical understanding of people is of fundamental importance not just those entering the teaching profession but for all walks of life. The course is will be inter-disciplinary in nature; and will offer perspectives in from a range of disciplines within Education, the Social Sciences and Philosophy.

This course is designed to question what makes us human and to explore the emergence of 'childhood' as a category of human. Through investigating ideas from archaeology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, religious studies and education students will have the opportunity to examine whether children are considered complete persons or whether they are persons in waiting.

Structure

2 one-hour lectures per week (12 weeks) and one 1½ hour seminars per week (10 weeks).

Assessment

1st Attempt: Mind map and written reflection on selected tutorial discussion equivalent to 1000 words (30%), 2000 word assignment (60%), tutorial asessment (10%).
