James Wyllie is Reader in International Relations and Director of Strategic Studies Programmes (see 'Teaching Responsibilities' below). He was previously a Research Officer at the Ministry of Defence in London, Tutor in Politics at Durham University, and Lecturer at the University of East Anglia before joining the Department of Politics and International Relations at Aberdeen as a lecturer in 1979. In 1988 he was a Commonwealth Research Fellow in Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. He has been Director of the postgraduate Master’s degree programmes in Strategic Studies at the University of Aberdeen since 1979. From 2012 until 2015 he was a a Visiting Scholar at the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Auswartige Politik e. V (German Council on Foreign Relations), Berlin. Between 1992 and 1997 he was specialist correspondent (Middle East) for the monthly Jane’s Intelligence Review, during which he published over 40 articles on Middle East security issues. For many years he has made frequent contributions to BBC and independent radio and television current affairs and news programmes. From 1997 until 2010 he was a senior academic member of the RAF Higher Level Defence Studies Selection Board, and between 2001and 2004 he was a member of the UK Council of Military Education Committees. For over thirty five years he has delivered presentations to a variety of academic, military and political audiences in the UK, Europe and elsewhere. In recent years he has given presentations at the RMA Sandhurst, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies in the UAE, the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, the Arab Institute for Security Studies in Amman, the EUFOR Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Sarajevo, the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, the Bundeswehr Joint Forces Operations Command in Potsdam, the Sultanate of Oman National Defence College in Muscat, and the London Diplomatic Academy. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies, and the German Council on Foreign Relations.
