Research Overview
I am currently a Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric and Internal Medicine. My research interests focus on diet and gut health in Parkinson's disease.
Current Research
I have recently completed a pilot study, GUT-PD, which recruited people with newly diagnosed Parkinson's and controls. They underwent assessment of their motor and non-motor symptoms, disease severity, ability to swallow water, sense of taste, and their body composition. They were interviewed to determine their dietary intake, and provided a stool sample, which was analysed for stool metabolites, and micro-organisms.
This study was generously supported by NHS Grampian Charities, and the Institutional Strategic Support Fund (locally distrubuted money, funded by the Wellcome Trust), and by the participants who kindly gave up their time.
Past Research
I completed my PhD on the potential of stem cells and growth factors to reverse disease progression in Parkinson's disease, under the supervision of Professor Susan Duty at King's College, London.
Since training at a doctor, I have worked with the research groups of Professor David Burn, in Newcastle, and Dr Carl Counsell, in Aberdeen. With them, I undertook clinical research, looking for factors, which might influence disease progression in Parkinson's disease, and also looking at the consequences of the disease, such as fracture and delirium.
Collaborations
GUT-PD was carried out in collaberation with Dr Angus MacLeod and Professor Phyo Myint at the Institute of Applied Medical Sciences, and Professor Karen Scott and Professor Alex Johnstone at the Rowett Institute.
