Biography
Dr. Callum Kaye is a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine at NHS Grampian, based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.
Dr. Kaye completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Aberdeen, followed by Foundation Training in North Scotland. He subsequently pursued clinical training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in West Yorkshire, Inverness and Aberdeen.
After qualifying as a Consultant, Dr. Kaye was awarded an NRS Career Researcher Fellowship, during which he completed a PhD focusing on a programme of work in traumatic brain injury. His research interests remain rooted in critical care medicine, with a particular emphasis on the acute management of brain-injured patients, cardiac arrest and ventilation. Dr. Kaye also leads a national network supporting best practices for brain injury care in Scotland.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Kaye is an active leader in Scouting, holding National and International leadership roles. He currently serves as a member of the World Scout Committee.

Research Overview
Dr Kaye's research focuses on improving outcomes in Critical Care, with particular interests in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), clinical trial methodology, and inclusive patient and public involvement (PPI).
Dr Kaye has a specific interest in the use of processed EEG (electroencephalography) to guide sedative use in patients with TBI. His work explores how EEG monitoring can optimise sedation management, balancing the need for patient comfort while supporting neurological recovery. This research aims to enhance brain injury care by minimising the risks of over-sedation or under-sedation, both of which can negatively impact patient outcomes.
Another key focus of Dr Kaye’s research is emergency consent and recruitment into clinical trials involving critically ill patients. Recognising the challenges posed by time-sensitive interventions and patients lacking capacity, he is keen to raise the profile of this issue, particularly with regard to non-CTIMP trials in Scotland. This work aims to ensure that ethical and efficient consent processes are in place to facilitate high-quality research while respecting patient autonomy in the context of acute care.
Dr Kaye is also committed to advancing inclusive patient and public involvement (PPI) in critical care research. He works to engage a diverse range of patients, families, and communities, ensuring their voices shape study design, delivery, and outcomes. By fostering inclusivity, he aims to make research more relevant, accessible, and impactful for those it seeks to benefit.
Through his focus on TBI, ethical trial recruitment, and inclusive research practices, Dr Kaye continues to drive innovation in critical care medicine and patient-centred research.
