Biography

Alison graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1995 with a first class Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences then went on to complete a PhD in 1999 from the same institution. During her PhD she worked with Prof. Mary Cotter and Prof. Norman Cameron studying cardiovascular complications in diabetic neuropathy. She returned to Aberdeen in 2001 to take up the position of Teaching Fellow in what was then the Department of Biomedical Sciences, now part of the School of Medical Sciences. Alison was promoted to Senior Teaching Fellow in 2008, was part of the team that set up Aberdeen Dental School in 2008 and became Principal Lead of Year 1 Medicine in 2013.  In 2013 she was also appointed Senior Personal Tutor for the School of Medical Sciences, and represents the College of Life Sciences and Medicine on the Personal Tutor Steering Group. In 2015 she became the Deputy Lead of Assessment with responsibility for the written assessment elements in the MBChB, PA and BDS programmes. She completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (Medical Education) in 2012 and became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in January 2015. In September 2017 Alison was appointed Deputy Programme Lead for MBChB.

Alison has a strong interest in medical education in general, and planetary health education in particular. She works closely with colleagues in NHS Highland to promote teaching and research into the relationships between climate and health.
