Espinas, púas, aguijones, ellos están resguardando las plantas. Por las espinas afiladas de la ceiba, los bordes espinosos del cardo mariano, los pinchos como cabellos del Opuntia o los pelitos frágiles de las ortigas, las plantas curan mamíferos, conservan agua y albergan animales. Cuando los abetos de Douglas sienten la nieve, saben que sus agujas les ayudarán a deslizar la espesa blancura para mantener sus ramas a salvo (Ambrose, Bayton, Candeias et al., 2018). Y cuando el arbusto de acebo se ve amenazado por un animal, sabe que puede adaptarse a la situación con sus hojas. Pero estas defensas no son suficientes. Los humanos también pueden conscientemente cuidar a las plantas. En estas entrevistas, los guardianes de las plantas nos cuentan de los obstáculos y las dificultades que han encontrado junto a las plantas. Todos comparten la idea de equilibrar el cuidado y el respeto por otras especies.
Thorns, spines or prickles: they guard the plants. With the sharp spines of the Kapok tree, or the spiny edges of the milk thistle, the hairlike prickles of the Opuntia to the brittle hairs of the nettles, plants heal mammals, preserve water and house animals. When the Douglas firs feel the snow, they know that their needles will help shrug off the heavy white blanket to keep their limbs safe (Ambrose, Bayton, Candeias et al., 2018). And when the Holly bush is threatened by an animal, they know they can adapt to the situation with their leaves. But these defences are not enough. Humans can also consciously care for plants. In these interviews, the plant guardians tell us about the hurdles and pains that they have encountered with plants. They all share this notion of balancing care and respect for other species.

Es una responsabilidad de los seres humanos, el cuidado, el respeto, el conocimiento y el que se siga divulgando y reconociendo también a las personas que las ocupan, que todavía [existe] esta gran desigualdad y desconocimiento por parte de muchos de nosotros, incluso de sector salud y de la población en general. El caso de las espinas son estrategias también evolutivamente maravillosas para poder conservar el agua, entonces no lo veo como un dolor. Dolor es cuando pues estamos perdiendo el conocimiento de estas plantas cuando las plantas están siendo pues ya, están de alguna manera en desuso, porque se utilizan plaguicidas, herbicidas, porque no se le da el verdadero valor que tienen estas especies y lo que nos han aportado a la ciencia también.
It is the responsibility of human beings to care for, respect and learn about these plants, and to continue to spread awareness and recognise the people who use them, as there is still great inequality and unawareness among many of us, including the health sector and the general population. Thorns are also an evolutionarily marvellous strategy for conserving water, so I don’t see them as [causing] pain. Pain is [when we are] losing knowledge of these plants, when they’re already falling into disuse, in a way, because pesticides and herbicides are being used, because these species aren’t valued as they should, given everything they have contributed to science/scientifically.

Siento admiración por la valentía de estas personas al invertir en una forma de conocimiento que no solo está devaluada por los sistemas de conocimiento centralizados y al servicio del Estado, sino que muchas veces puede ser perseguida. Admiro la fuerza y la sabiduría que les permite servir a sus comunidades.
I feel admiration for the bravery of these people to invest into a form of knowledge that is not only devalued by centralised, state-serving knowledge systems but can many times be persecuted. I admire the strength and wisdom that allows them to serve their communities.
