The generosity of scholarship donors who give to the University of Aberdeen was recognised at an event this week.
The annual Scholars’ Reception was held in the Craig Suite of the Sir Duncan Rice Library on Tuesday, April 24 and was attended by more than 40 scholars, as well as donors and University staff.
Over 300 scholarships are awarded each year at a value of £3.2 million. The reception gives donors the opportunity to meet their scholars, often for the first time .
Senior Vice Principal, Professor Stephen Logan introduced the event’s speakers who were Professor Phil Hannaford, Vice Principal for Research and Knowledge at the University, Sarah Keung who is studying for an MSc in Environmental Science and is the recipient of the James Henry Scott Scholarship. Also speaking at the event was Callum Pierce, a fourth year medical student who receives the Pirie and Hunter Scholarship.
Each of the speakers spoke of the importance of scholarships and the two students discussed the impact that receiving scholarships had on them and their studies.
Professor Logan said: “The Scholars’ Reception is an important event as it provides the perfect opportunity for the University to thank our donors for the support and generosity they show us.
“It was fantastic to hear from two of our scholars who were able to highlight the importance of receiving a scholarship, and the impact it has had on them while they carry out their studies at the University.”

Fundraising income for the University of Aberdeen is channelled through the institution’s Development Trust which is an independent registered charity. The Trust raises essential funds to support much of the University’s activities such as vital medical research as well as supporting students through the provision of scholarships, bursaries and facilities.
