Elphinstone Institute Public Lecture Series
What do modern day folk singers sing about? How are they contributing to contemporary culture and society in Scotland and beyond? In his recent book, 'Voicing Scotland: Folk, Culture, Nation' (Luath Press, 2012), Gary West addresses these issues from a performer's perspective, and argues that the modern folk voice has a great deal of value to say to us about the big issues of humanity in the modern world. In this lecture, he will provide some examples, illustrating his points by performing some of the songs and tunes which lie at the heart of his study.
Dr Gary West is a Senior Lecturer in Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, as well as an active musician who has taught and performed widely both in Scotland and internationally. He presents the weekly traditional music programme, Pipeline, on BBC Radio Scotland, and is chair of a newly established body, Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland.
