Location

The memorial is set into a hillside at the southern edge of the village, and to the east of the railway line. It can be seen from the road outside numbers 17 & 19 Marine Terrace. (After entering the village, turn right at the phone box - this is Marine Terrace.)

Description

A mosaic of tesserae in earth colours showing a royal crown and the word 'PEACE' above with the date '1919' below, set in a shield of pinkish concrete. Most unusual among war memorials in actually celebrating peace as opposed to commemorating war.

Related Information

This area was at one time the centre of the village and the train station was situated near the memorial. The (now demolished) Marine Hotel stood in the land now occupied by the new housing development (just south-west of the memorial).
