Biography: Son of William and Mary Duncan, Urquhart Road, Aberdeen ; born Aberdeen, 1914 ; educated at Robert Gordon's College. In 1935 he graduated M.A. with First Class Honours in History, gaining the Forbes Gold Medal and the Caithness and Gladstone Prizes. Later he went to London University to do historical research and to study Arabic, his proficiency in which gained him a position as Secretary in the Aden office of an importing firm. At the opening of the war he joined the Royal Army Service Corps and served in France. He was later commissioned with the Seaforth Highlanders, and was frequently employed on special missions because of his knowledge of Arabic. He was killed in action in the Middle East in November 1942.
