Biography: Son of Alfred F. Mitchell; born Aberdeen, 11 March 1887. M.A. (I Math.), 1909; Arnott Prize; Robert Fletcher Scholar. First Class Math. Tripos, Part I, Camborn, 1910. 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Garrison Artillery, 8 January 1916. Seconded to Royal Engineers (Sound Ranging Section). Served-Home, France, 1916-18. Final rank, Lieutenant.
