Biography: Son of Robert McHardy; born Glenrinnes, 13 October 1884. M.A. (I Classics), 1907; Jenkyns, Blackwell, Gladstone Memorial, Prizes; Fullerton Scholar. Private, Uganda Railway Volunteers, August 1914; transferred East African Maxims; commissioned, Railway Transport, 8 November 1915. Returned to Civil duty at request of Government of British East Africa, April 1917. Final rank, Captain. Three mentions in despatches, 1916, 1917, 1918.
