Craig, William Tait

Biography: Son of George Craig, lightkeeper; born Turnberry Light-house, Ayrshire, 2 0 June. 1882 ; educated Lossiemouth Public School, Morayshire ; graduated M.A., 1905. He taught first at New-battle Public School, Midlothian, afterwards at Carluke High School, and finally was appointed Mathematical Master at the Hutcheson's Boys' Grammar School, Glasgow. From the last-named School Craig enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in September 1914, and in April 1915 received a commission in the 1st Scottish Rifles. He served with that Battalion in France for three years, gaining the respect of his fellow-officers for his coolness in the face of danger. In 1917 he was mentioned in dispatches for the gallant capture of an enemy trench. He fell at Villers Guislain on 21 September 1918, while leading his men to the attack in the face of severe machine gun fire. The Brigadier General wrote of him : "He was a most able, painstaking, gallant officer, and his untimely death is a great loss to his Battalion and his Brigade".
