Biography: Son of James Lewis ; born Howden, Yorkshire, 5 November 1894. M.A. (I CIass), 1915 ; Simpson Greek Prize. Commissioned, Royal Field Artillery, March 1915. Served-Home, 1915-16; France, January 1916-December 1918; Germany (Army of Occupation), December 1918-October 1919. Final rank, Captain. Military Cross, October 1918.
