Biography: Son of John Maitland, farmer, East Balhalgardy, Inverurie ; born Chapel of Garioch, June 1883 ; educated at Inverurie and at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen; student in Agriculture, 1899-1900. At the outbreak of war he was farming in New Zealand, and in May 1916 joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade as a Private. He was drafted to England in December 1916, and the following month was sent to France where he took his share in the dangers of the campaign. He was killed in action at Bapaume on 29 August 1918.

Burial Details: Buried at Favreuil British Cemetery, Plot 1, Row D, Grave 11.
