Biography: Son of Alexander I. Pirie; born Rousay, 23 November 1888. M.A. (I Class, dist.), 1910; Simpson Greek Prize; Ferguson Scholar. Glasgow University O.T.C. 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Hampshire Regiment (Territorial Force), 20 December 1914. Seconded to Machine Gun Corps. Served-India, Mesopotamia, December 1914-May 1916; Home, 1916-18; France, January-March 1918. Final rank, Acting Captain.
