Portinari, Sir Giovanni
- Biography
- Military engineer. Probably born in Florence. Living in England by 1526, one of the king's gentleman pensioners. Retained this position til at least 1547. Employed on a number of royal commissions 1539-47. Employed in the dissolution of the monasteries 1548. Went to France to work on Piedmont fortifications, but had returned to England by 1560. Probably knighted around 1560. Employed in Berwick 1560-6. Last reference to him in 1572.
