Biography
Scholar and writer. Born Antwerp 1563. Settled in London with his parents, followed his father into trade as a cloth merchant. Largely self-taught, but briefly instructed by his uncle, Abraham Ortelius. Received the nickname "Ortelianus". Travelled widely in Germany and the Netherlands 1592. Grand tour 1597. Published several works, his greatest being Theatrum orbis terrarum. Supervisor of the design of a triumphal arch for Charles I's coronation, 1625. Died London 1628.
