Biography
Diarist. Born Nunwell, near Isle of Wighjt, 1585. Attended Winchester College, then Balliol Coll., Oxford 1603-6. Entered Middle Temple 1604, but not called to the bar. Succeeded to family estates 1609. Knighted 1615. Deputy governor of Portsmouth 1620-3. Deputy governor of Isle of Wight 1624. MP for Yarmouth 1625, 1626, 1628-9. Commissioner of oyer and terminer for Hampshire 1635. Sheriff of Hampshire 1637-9. Arrested June 1643 on suspicion of delinquency, for refusing the commission of governor of the Isle of Wight. Released after 8 weeks, but re-arrested Jan 1644. Released Apr 1645 and returned to the island. Visited by the King 1647-8. Arrested Jan 1651 on suspicion of treasonable designs, released Feb 1652. Died Nunwell 1655.
