Biography
Magnate, born 23 Apr 1512, godson of Henry VIII. Page to the king 1527. Summoned to parliament 1534 as Baron Maltravers. Deputy of Calais 1540. Became 12th Earl 23 Jan 1544. Elected Knight of the Garter 24 Apr 1544. Became lord chamberlain and privy councillor July 1546, lost chamberlainship and membership of Privy Council 14 Jan 1550. Arrested 16 Oct 1551 for treason, imprisoned for a year. Lord steward and president of the privy council 1553. Lieutenant-general for the defence of England 1557. Went abroad 1566-67. Returned to Privy Council 1573-9. He died at Arundel House in Feb 1580.



From Provenance Catalogue: The 12th earl was born in 1512 and succeeded to the title in 1544. He distinguished himself as a soldier and later became Lord Chamberlain. At one time he was one of Queen Elizabeth's favourites. His large library was inherited by his son-in-law John, Lord Lumley.
