Biography: Born Huntly 1828. Educated Elgin Academy, then King's Coll. 1842, M.A. 1846. Parish schoolmaster of Gamrie 1846, classical master Aberdeen Grammar School 1848. Rector of the grammar school 1853. Professor of Greek King's Coll. 1855. Published Greek Grammar 1855. Professor of Greek in the United University 1860-85. Principal and vice-chancellor of the Univ. of Aberdeen 1885. L.L.D. Edinburgh 1876, Litt.D. Dublin 1893. Knighted 1892. Died Old Aberdeen 1900.
