Biography
Born Cork, 1840. Educated at the diocesan school and Dr Douglas's school, matriculated Queen's College, Cork at 16, sent to Trinity College, Dublin 1858-64, graduated B.A. 1861. Ordained deacon to the curacy of St John's, Sligo 1864. Ordained priest 1865. Appointed perpetual curate of Calry (a suburb of Cork) 1867. Curate of St Stephen's Church, Dublin 1870. Pantonian Professor of Theology at the Scottish Episcopal church's Trinity College, Glenalmond 1874, B.D. Trinity College, Dublin 1874. D.D. Trinity College 1876, Donnellan lecturer University of Dublin 1885-6, select preacher there 1886-7, also Cambridge 1888. Bishop of Edinburgh 1886. Honorary LLD University of Edinburgh 1904. Died Edinburgh 1910.

From Provenance Catalogue: Dowden was born in Cork in 1840. In 1858 he went to Trinity College, Dublin, where he took his B.A. He joined the Scottish Episcopal Church and was appointed head of the new Theology Hall of the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1880. His reputation grew with its success and he was appointed Bishop of Edinburgh in 1886. See D.N.B.
