Campbell, George

Biography

Born Aberdeen 1719. Educated Aberdeen Grammar School, M.A. Marischal Coll.1734-8. Apprenticed in Edinburgh to a writer to the signet, but abandoned in favour of divinity 1741. Returned to Divinity Hall, Aberdeen. Licensed to preach 1746, called to the parish of Banchory-Ternan, ordained 1748. Returned to Aberdeen 1757. Principal, Marischal Coll. 1759. D.D. King's Coll. 1761. Professor of Divinity, Marischal Coll. 1771. Original member of the Aberdeen Philosophical Society. Published sermons. Resigned the divinity chair and the principalship 1795 due to illness and the death of his wife. Died Aberdeen 1796.
